Increasing global evidence shows us that midwives provide better quality of care andsignificantly reduce maternal and newborn morbidity and mortality. The Government of India decided to establish a new cadre of midwives, and introduced theMidwifery Services Guidelines in 2018. This programme envisions setting up National MidwiferyTraining Institutes (NMTIs) and State Midwifery Training Institutes (SMTIs), with a cascademodel for capacity building across the country. Once these midwives complete their training, they are expected to set up Midwifery Led Care Units (MLCUs), where women will have accessto the midwifery model of care.
